Remember the numerous studies that said that sexual acts before an athlete’s performance will lead to a reduction in testosterone levels or simply put enactments on the field? It is proving to be a myth, scientists say. Apart from combat athletes such as boxers and fighters who may lose their aggressiveness as a result of sex before a fight, the idea that sex diminishes an athlete’s performance may not have scientific backing, so say the experts.
A certain Antonio Miguel, Head of Medical Services at the Club Universidad Nacional Pumas in Mexico, after research, is proving that the idea is just a myth born out of ignorance. So the days coaches gave nitrates salt to athletes to prevent erection to bar sexual desires have gone with the wind?.
Some physical scientists like Juan Carlos Medina, General Coordinator of the Sports department at the Tecnologico de Monterrey, a Mexico University, believe so. Medina actually believes sexual relations actually have benefits for athletes.
He explains, "sex relaxes” and “helps to reduce the athlete's anxiety levels before an important match."
Dr. Ian Kerner a sexuality counselor and New York Times best-selling author of numerous books for Harper Collins in a piece on Huffington Post argues that, not only does being healthy support your sex life, but sex actually supports your health.
The famous former Barcelona superstar Ronaldo de Assis Moreira AKA Ronaldinho like many others, admitted having sex as a pre-match ritual at Barcelona. Though it cannot be proven it enhanced his performance, to rule it out completely too will also be out of place. Could it be the reason why he came to the field always beaming with smiles and so relaxed, while his teammates and opponents show up with straight faces?
So will there be a time when world athletes and coaches will involve sexual activities as part of their training? May be.
I know there are many claims players ‘flood’ themselves with women during these tournaments. Is it even far-fetched to suggest that married players go to the Brazil tournament with their wife or girlfriends? Maybe the time has come to recognize football partners if they want to accompany their hubbies on tournaments.
Perhaps, the spread of HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases was not the only reason why the International Olympic Committee distributed 150,000 condoms to the athletes who competed in the London 2012 Olympics but to also subtly goad them to ensure they had lots of sex for great performances in that competition.
For me, anything the Black Stars must do to make it to the finals in Brazil should be done, and if protective sex is one such means, why not?
